Alegría

Alegría was a touring Cirque du Soleil production created in 1994 by director Franco Dragone and director of creation Gilles Ste-Croix. Since 1994, Alegría has toured in over 5000 shows in 250 cities with over 14 million spectators.^[1] Alegría premiered on April 21, 1994, in Montreal, QC.

On April 25, 2018, Cirque du Soleil announced that a touring reinterpretation of Alegria would launch on April 18, 2019, to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Alegría.^[2]^[3]

Alegría comes from the word "allegria" meaning "cheer up or joy" in Italian^[4] and in Spanish.^[5]

Production[]

Alegría was created out of the creative process of working on Mystère. According to Franco Dragone, the adaption of the technical demands for a Grand Chapiteau show to the Mystère theater caused many problems. Out of these frustrations, Dragone spoke to Guy Laliberté, co-founder and CEO of Cirque du Soleil, at a restaurant stating that the next show will be inspired by the pain and frustration of working on Mystère.^[6]

"'Alegría! Alegría! Alegría!'...Where I come from, it's what you say when you're in pain," Dragone stated, "It means life goes on!"^[6]

Set designer Michel Crête stated that the Alegría's themes, oppression, the weight of the powerless, and the abuse of power come from the deeply unsettling real-life event of the murder of James Bulger that happened during the creative process of Alegría.^[6]

Crête stated, "We couldn't get over it...I remember thinking 'How can a human being pretend the right to exercise such power over another human being'? What really struck me was that it was children acting in such an evil way. For me, Alegría about the abuse of power."^[6]

Set & Technical Information[]

The set for Alegría has a giant dome set on top of giant stylistic columns and balustrades. The dome shape represents many powerful institutions, such as churches and government buildings.^[7] Gothic arches were used in the set design to symbolize the theme of oppressive power in Alegría.^[6]

The spiral ramps on the side of the stage leading downward represent the unknown. The stage floor is decorated with different colors with a symbol of a salamander that lives on all four elements. The lighting of the show creates an autumn-like nostalgic atmosphere and is to reflect that of a 17th-century ballroom.^[7]

Set designer Michel Crête was influenced by the weight of power. While the previous Cirque du Soleil production Saltimbanco's stage was about bringing in light, Alegría's stage was about dark. "Alegría is the opposite of Saltimbanco, " stated Crête "Saltimbanco was about lightness, this was about heaviness."^[6]

Costume Design[]

Alegría's costumes have two very distinct looks and feel to represent the two generations: The Old Order and The New Order. The Old Order has richly-colored fabrics that are hand-detailed with lace, feathers and sequins. They are inspired by the Versailles aristocracy and European wears.^[7] The New Order have richly-colored fabrics, but with less overall decorations. The materials used for The New Order are much lighter to represent the youth of the order. Alegría has over 400 costume pieces which are made at the Cirque du Soleil International Headquarters from over 300 artisan employees. For the touring artisan team, the wardrobe department includes 4 permanent touring staff and 2 or 3 local wardrobe employees in each city. ^[7]

Lycra is one of the most-used fabrics for the costumes because it is flexible and comfortable for the artists and is easy to care for.^[7]
It takes approximately 200 hours to create one Old Bird costume.^[7]
Each of the singers’ costumes includes more than 200 hand-sewn jewels.^[7]

Characters[]

Fleur: Fleur, our guide through the world of Alegría, is unreliable, unearthly, and unpredictable. Carrying his lighted staff, he parades around humoring the Old Birds who hover around him. He can appear fun loving, but the hunch-backed Fleur is jealous, petty, and angry. He is rotten to the core, yet elegantly dressed in a red velvet coachman's jacket, black brimmed hat and jeweled vest that barely covers his protruding belly. ^[8]
The Nostalgic Old Birds: The Nostalgic Old Birds believe the idea that they are still young and beautiful and the future is still theirs. They admire their reflections in mirror-less frames but they are only empty shells, shadows of their former selves. They are the old aristocracy, still convinced of their power and beauty; but they are twisted, deformed and ugly. They wear fanciful hats and hide behind their flamboyant costumes covered with lace, jewels, and embroidery. ^[8]
Tamir and Little Tamir: Always available and ever helpful, Tamir is like a magical fairy who appears when he is needed, only to suddenly disappear when he has fulfilled his mission. Dressed in a distinctive gold coat, quilted white trousers and a bowler hat, his wide grin and sparkling eyes are windows into his generous soul. ^[8]
The Nymphs: The Nymphs are youthful and ethereal. Their exuberance is infectious and their enchanting dance can melt the hardest of hearts. These gentle creatures exude sensuality and beauty as they glide across the stage. ^[8]
The White Singer: The White Singer is the storyteller who echoes in song everything she sees around her. She sings of melancholy and despair, of joy and happiness. Her luminous white gown is exquisite and she moves like a delicate porcelain doll in a jewelry box. ^[8]
The Black Singer: The Black Singer is the White Singer's alter ego. While she too expresses in song the atmosphere of Alegría, there is wickedness about her. In her elegant black dress, which mirrors that of the White Singer, she hides many secrets in her dark heart. ^[8]
The Clowns: The clowns are witnesses to the passing of centuries, the social commentators of Alegría. The clowns reflect the eternal spirit of mankind. They are grounded and realistic, telling little stories of everyday life – where everyone is a hero, where anyone can fall in love and suffer a broken heart. The clowns are visionaries – philosophers of absurdity. Endearing, comical and child-like, they turn the world into a circus. ^[9]

Final Acts:

Synchronized Trapeze: Youthful and free, the acrobatic duo performs spins and breathtaking maneuvers in perfect sync. On the trapeze, these two artists become one; together they defy gravity and create a remarkable harmony. ^[10]
Power Track (Fast Track): An ethereal group of performers soar in the air executing lively gymnastic and tumbling displays in unison and in counterpoint, reaching astounding heights and speeds on an elongated overlapping trampoline that magically appears from within the stage. ^[11]
Hand Balancing: Romantic and elegant, this act requires great strength and flexibility. Displaying impressive control, the artist balances on canes of various heights, slowly executing a series of astounding figures. The tallest cane is 1.9 meters high. ^[12]
Fire Knife Dance: Tribal and magical - this authentic ritual dance is performed with the pulsing rhythm of Congo drums by artists weaving their baton-like fire knives around their entire body, from the feet to the palms to the mouth, in a seductively dangerous dance. ^[13]
Manipulation (Hoops): This performer combines rhythmic gymnastics, flexible contortion, deft juggling and graceful ballet into one act. Using silver hoops and beautiful silk ribbons, she dances and leaps across the stage as the music plays on. ^[14]
Flying Man: This virtuoso defies gravity and explanation in his powerful and graceful performance. Combining the elasticity of the bungee with the power of the gymnastic rings, the artist soars through the air while performing acrobatic feats. His awe-inspiring performance is a combination of incredible skill, agility and strength. ^[15]
Russian Bars: Amazing acrobatic flyers are thrust into the air from a single, double or triple bar that is perched on the shoulders of powerful catchers. The sure-footed flyers perform multiple synchronized somersaults and mid-air twists at an unbelievable pace. Each flexible bar measures two to six inches in width. ^[16]
Contortion: Those young but veteran performers bring the refined Mongolian art of contortion to life. While perched on a rotating table, they execute both impressive and imaginative feats of flexibility and balance. The fluid movements are masterful, as they manipulates into extraordinary sculpted forms. ^[17]
Aerial High Bars: Three high bars set more than 40 feet above the stage form the aerial playground for daring acrobats to fly to and from the arms of mighty catchers, suspended by their knees on a cradle swing. The astounding act culminates in an impressive plunge into the net. ^[18]
Clown Acts: The three clowns poignantly portray the issues of love and love-lost (The Storm), friendship and folly (Birds on a Wire, The Shadow) and the environment (The Big Mess). Their presence is felt throughout the production as their humor heightens, lightens, links or disrupts the artistic flow of the tale. ^[19]

Retired Acts:

Strong Man: Reminiscent of the Strong Man acts of traditional circus culture, Alegria's gentle giant bends bars of steel, juggles 34 kilo weights and even lifts 340 kilos with his bare teeth. In spite of his obvious strength, two less timorous birds fly onto his "perch" and playfully challenge his fortitude. ^[19]
Aerial Cube: Mind over matter, light over darkness, the cube man in a seemingly effortless manner dominates his instrument. Shunning open shows of strength in favor of the more subtle artistry evoked by sensual masculine movement, the performer manipulates the cube while suspended in the air or, in a stunning flurry of light, on the ground. Strong yet tender, natural and surreal the cube man evokes a higher authority in search of life's force. ^[19]
